What is a Nipple Shield

What is a Nipple Shield?

Nipple shields are a tool for moms who are experiencing serious latch problems and should be used temporarily under the guidance of a lactation professional. It may be time to try nipple shield breastfeeding if you're experiencing nipple pain due to your baby not latching properly.

During your first time using a nipple shield to breastfeed your baby, your lactation consultant will guide you step-by-step through fitting and using the shield. The use of nipple shields for the entire feeding is not recommended unless explicitly recommended by your healthcare professional. If you prefer, you can begin nursing your baby with the shield in place for a few minutes before removing it and trying to latch your baby directly onto your breast.
